Local involvement in West Bromwich

On the construction site of the new West Bromwich Leisure Centre, students from Future Skills Sandwell buried a time capsule representing life in 2013. Sandwell Council representatives and leisure industry leaders gathered to celebrate the official commencement of building work.

This student involvement in the ceremony is symbolic of the local involvement in the project. At least 10 local students will be involved in the construction process and Pellikaan Construction has actively searched local suppliers and subcontractors for the new centre. Approximately 70% of works currently subcontracted is with local businesses. Collaboration with the council’s organisation “Think Local” enables Pellikaan to optimise local involvement during the process.

The local involvement will continue during operation of the West Bromwich Leisure Centre by leisure operator DC Leisure, as local involvement and regeneration are important factors for this project, stimulated by the enthusiasm and support of Sandwell Council.

Councillor Steve Eling, Deputy Leader of Sandwell Council, commented: “With doom and gloom in the headlines, coming into West Bromwich and seeing fantastic regeneration and redevelopment work underway creates a really positive feeling. We are proud of the new opportunities planned for our young people and are confident that we are helping to grow a skilled and employable workforce. I’m staggered by the progress already made on the West Bromwich Leisure Centre site in such a short time and pleased that the facility will be a big part of the area’s future.”

The new leisure centre, designed by Roberts Limbrick Architects, is set to open in spring 2014, offering a 25m pool, learner pool, sauna and steam room, a four-court sports hall, fitness suite, dance studios, a dedicated children’s adventure area and a café. Works on site started in February, at the moment, foundation works and works on the pool shell are well underway.
