Shorter construction time with lean programming

In Middelburg, The Netherlands Pellikaan applied the pull programming method according to the lean philosophy for the first time. It was immediately successful: the construction time of the sports hall was two months shorter then for similar projects.

Last Friday, phase 1 on the sports complex was handed successfully. This phase consisted of 2 multipurpose halls and a sports hall. Phase 2, which will be built now, will be a second sports hall and cafeteria facilities.

To achieve this tight programme, there was even more cooperation and liaison then usual. High levels of transparency amongst the construction partners was required. To schedule the construction of this sports hall, a meeting took place during which 95% of the construction partners made a programme for all construction works together. A meeting with almost 30 parties! The partners made a programme for all works from piling to tiling. Everybody was present, the client, architect and engineers as well as the bricklayer, floor supplier and decorators. The works have been scheduled per day and per area.

An amended programme has been made during construction. Again, all parties were present at this session. In spite of 27 bad weather days, the sports hall was completed exactly according to this tight programme! The programming meeting for phase two of the Middelburg project has been scheduled.
