Topping out West Bromwich Leisure Centre

Mayor Councillor Linda Horton and Councillor Steve Eling, Sandwell's deputy leader, unveiled the name sign at “West Bromwich Leisure Centre”. The ceremony marked the topping out of the new leisure centre, which is on schedule to open in the summer of 2014.

Representatives from Sandwell Council, DC Leisure, Sport England and Pellikaan joined the Mayor on her visit of the building. In their speeches, all parties stress the importance of partnership: this has a very positive influence on the outcome.

Councillor Steve Eling, Sandwell's deputy leader, says: “Pools across the UK are closing because they are grossly inefficient and councils cannot afford to maintain them. What we have here is a mixture of facilities, design and procedures that will mean the centre is sustainable for the future.”

Operator DC Leisure confirms this; Peter Kirkham, Development Director: “We are confident that when the finished building opens next summer it will exceed all expectations and attract 600–700,000 users per year.”

Kevin Mills, Strategic Lead Capital Projects and Facilities, Sport England comments: “The West Bromwich Leisure Centre project is an impressive example of organisations working together to achieve a great outcome.”
