Work Experience Week

Work Experience Week

17-year old Ben McStay, son of one of our project managers chose to do his Work Experience Week at Pellikaan. The Sixth Form student says, ‘I have always been intrigued in what my dad does, who is involved in building leisure facilities’. Ben is not expecting to be in construction in the future, but he is a keen end-user of leisure facilities and he does consider pursuing a career in sports coaching. Therefore, he thought it would be interesting to see how a site goes from being empty to a finished leisure centre. We could not show him exactly that in just the one week, but he did get to spend his week with Pellikaan on our site in Washington, where construction on the new leisure centre is underway. Ben was shown various aspects of the work on site; he shadowed the site manager, helped around site and the office and also spent quite some time with the design manager. With the latter, he sat in a client meeting to discuss final ideas and designs.

On asking whether this week has changed his ideas about his future career, Ben stated that the week helped him understand that design especially could actually still be a desired route in life he could possibly take. ‘I have had in the past the idea of maybe one day wanting to study product design or design of some sort!’ Ben had a good week gaining some understanding of the working world, but he will probably continue to pursue a career in high level coaching after all.
