PELLIKAAN'S LATEST DEVELOPMENTS
Sustainability is high on everybody's agendas these days. This is reflected in our projects, such as an energy efficient swimming pool in Belgium and the Watford Leisure Centre WOODSIDE which was nominated for a sustainability award. We also have news about a community centre in Germany and on Dutch cooperation on sports and education.
If you would like to read more about these projects, you can visit our website. Also, if there is any way we can assist you or if you would like to visit one of our recent projects, please e-mail us.

SUSTAINABILITY NOMINATION
We are proud that Watford Leisure Centre WOODSIDE is shortlisted for one of the major awards of the year: The Sustainability Awards 2008. The WOODSIDE Centre was built as part of a £20m project for Watford Borough Council.
Examples of sustainable measures are high insulation levels, air tightness, solar thermal array, rainwater recycling and heat recovery systems. The ground source heat pump system enables use of the natural heat of the earth and re-uses excess heat generated by cooling. |
ENERGY EFFICIENT SWIMMING POOL
In Tessenderlo, Belgium, Pellikaan recently completed an extremely energy efficient swimming pool complex. Apart from more common measures such as insulation, air tightness, modulating burners, condensing boilers, transformer boosters and frequency control; more innovating investments were made for reduction of vaporizing loss and heat recovery from vapour.

Swimming Pool De Vloetlijn |
| Client: |
Tessenderlo Council, Belgium |
| Description: |
With a 25m competition pool, a learner pool, a children’s pool and a reception pool for the slide, the amount of water surface in the centre justifies the introduction of measures specifically aimed at reduction of evaporation and heat recovery from vapour. Vaporizing losses are reduced by covering large pools and emptying small pools overnight. Sensible as well as latent heat are recovered from water vapour and used to pre-heat air and pool water. These combined measures of 110,000 euros lead to yearly savings of 23,500 euros, resulting in a payback time of approx. 5 to 6 years. |
NEW COMMUNITY CENTRE FOR DÜSSELDORF
Bilk Community Centre was opened in Düsseldorf as part of the major Bilker Arcaden development designed by Allmann, Sattler & Wappner Architects. Pellikaan built a new swimming pool, library and council chambers for the centre. We also undertook the offices areas that are part of this project.
COMBINED SCHOOL AND SPORTS CENTRE
Extraordinary cooperation between council, school and the local korfball club resulted in merging of cost and operation aspects so both the school and the club have the desired sports facilities. The school entrance and cafeteria are used by the korfball club in the evenings, and the sports hall and artificial pitches can be used by the school during the day.
