Morden Leisure Centre, Merton

For the London Borough of Merton, Pellikaan delivered a new leisure centre at Morden Park.

Morden’s new leisure centre features a 25 meter pool, as well as a learner pool with moveable floor so it is also suitable for diving from the 1 meter springboards – and from the diving tower with 3- and 5-meter platforms. Other facilities include a spacious gym, large studio and café area.

The centre is highly accessible with Changing Places facilities in addition to the substantial amount of dedicated toilets and showers and the pool pod.

Measures taken to comply with London’s sustainability requirements include provision of solar panels, CHP, car charging facilities and a wadi for storage of excess rainwater.

More information

The two-stage tender process for this JCT contract required cost information for preliminaries, overhead and profit, and project cost. In the design stage we already questioned whether the budget available would be in line with the proposed design and specifications.

During the PCSA stage, the budget for Morden Leisure Centre was reduced significantly. The centre was delivered 17 days early.

Taking on board the budget difficulties we worked very closely with the novated GT3 Architects during the PCSA stage to bring the project within budget whilst safeguarding the original design intent and improving long-term operational benefits. We developed a more buildable solution for the project, including some alternative materials. We even added additional floor space in the gym by closing the void over the entrance area.

Swimming Pool De Vrolijkheid, Zwolle

Swimming Pool De Vrolijkheid, Zwolle

Swimming Pool De Vrolijkheid has approx 1575 m2 water surface. 25 meter pools, training pool, children’s pool and a combined training- and leisure pool.

In addition there is an indoor slide, a restaurant, spectator seating and several areas for clubs and fitness. Pellikaan was able to provide the best proposal within the tight budget that Zwolle Council had set. The design & build plan was judged on design, maintenance and operation. Our operating experience was very useful in developing this efficient plan.

Sustainability

In the building, several sustainability measures were provided which save energy, water and maintenance cost, and which generate heat. Examples include an optimum location facing the sun, the indoor slide, low-pressure pool filters, high-efficiently motors in the air handling units, heat recovery,

additional insulation, grey-water circuit, LED lighting, use of a biomass installation, solar boiler and 2550 m2 photovoltaic panels.

Because of these measures, this swimming pool is one of the most energy efficient pools that can be realised at this time.

Sports Centre De Roodloop Hilvarenbeek

Sports Centre De Roodloop Hilvarenbeek

We worked closely together with our M&E partner and architect for the design and build construction of this new sports hall – swimming pool combination. Long term maintenance of the installations is part of the contract.

The compact building takes into account the requirements of the visitors very well. When you enter the building, you can see where you need to go right away. From the café are, you can see the sports hall as well as the swimming pool. Visitors will feel welcomed and be enticed to do sports.

A lot of attention went to the sustainability of the building, which resulted in an all-electric centre: the first swimming pool without a gas connection. This is achieved by a combination of reducing energy requirements through high insulation values and airtightness, and with technical installations including solar panels, heat pumps, LED lighting and heat recovery systems.

The Hive Leisure Centre, Ely

The Hive Leisure Centre, Ely

The famous cathedral of Ely served as inspiration for the choice of materials for the new Leisure in East Cambridgeshire. For example on the sports hall walls.

Value engineering and design development were essential for this project, and we worked closely together with Roberts Limbrick Architects to achieve the best possible value for money whilst staying true to the design philosophy of the AFLS&P design, which was the basis for the project at tender stage. One example of this that we moved the basement and roof plant rooms to the ground floor and first floor levels without increasing the building’s footprint.

'Oktopus' Leisure Centre Siegburg

'Oktopus' Leisure Centre Siegburg

Pellikaan created an attractive sports fitness, wellness and recreation world, including renovation of an indoor and outdoor swimming pool (50m).

The biggest attraction is the diving centre with Germany’s deepest diving tower of 20.5 m. Diving enthusiasts can go on expeditions in the “Ruins of the sunken, ancient town of Atlantis” built there. The powerful surf complex is a big challenge for surfers. At 60 kilometers per hour the water shoots up to create “the perfect wave”. There is a slide with four “fast tubes”, a huge tyre flume and two turbo flumes, suitable for fast slide contests.

Alongside the fitness area, a spa and wellness area offers a sauna, steam bath, cosmetic treatments and a massage. The “Friendly Cityhotel Oktopus”, joined to the centre, has 57 modern rooms, interesting themed suites, conference rooms and a well styled restaurant with a café, bar and lounge.

The Oktopus is extremely ecologically and economically sound, due to various efficiency measures. The special attractions and the sustainable energy supply concept are guarantees for long-term project success. The Oktopus will thereby set the standard for many centres.

Family Pool and Wellness Centre Mölln

Family Pool and Wellness Centre Mölln

At the location of the previous spa baths in Mölln, Pellikaan built a new pool and sauna centre. The design concept of Geising & Böker splits the building horizontally in a heavy pedestal and a light, floating top, that appears to be flowing in the wind between the trees.

The pool targets athletes, non-swimmers and parents with children. Therefore a 25 meter pool was created as well as a play- and learner pool with hydrotherapy, and that is suitable for aquacycling as well as swimming lessons. For the little ones, a play area was created. There is ample space to relax as well.

The sauna area has two saunas and a steam room. Very spacious relax areas have been set up in this section of the centre. The open fireplace and the sauna garden complete the offer.

Sparkhill Pool and Fitness Centre

Sparkhill Pool and Fitness Centre

Design & Build construction of the new Sparkhill Pool and Fitness Centre, which includes a training pool, learner pool, gym, dance and cycle studios. The centre is unique in its design and is sympathetic to the history of the old baths which used to sit on the same site. The site is tightly located in a very vibrant area between a library and a school building.

That meant that it was extra important to get the build programme just right. Each delivery had to be right on time, so the materials could be used in the building right away; and at the same time, all works needed to be on schedule, so the goods that were being delivered did not need to be stored on site waiting to be used. We uses lean planning techniques and extremely short communication lines to ensure the successful delivery of the project.

The project is part of a Design, Build, Operate and Maintain (DBOM) contract awarded to Places for People Leisure by Birmingham City Council.

Pool Stadspark Turnhout

Pool Stadspark Turnhout

After years of vacancy, this Belgian swimming pool received a thorough facelift and extension of facilities. Structural improvement works were done to the basement, pool basins, floors and plant rooms, and the used technology guarantees a final and sustainable solution for the pool. To deal with ground water issues, 1680 cubic meters of concrete was used, that is approximately 4 million kilos.

The leisure pool has a great offer for all ages, with a kids world, a fun- and leisure zone and a 25 meter training pool and a learner pool – both with moveable floor. The wellness area has a whirlpool, sauna and three steam rooms. Especially the play world and the 74 meter long slide stand out. The slide has three dimensional effects, for which the user can pick their own theme, like Halloween or disco. Or you can choose to score as many points as possible along the way by touching specific places of the slide.

The restaurant area offers views offer the kids world and the 25 meter pool. Outside, a spray park was realised.

This DBFMO project was realised together with ESSA engineers and architects, and with operator Optisport, who will operate the pool for 20 years.

AQUApark Oberhausen

AQUApark Oberhausen

The design for AQUApark was inspired by the views of the drilling rig of a close-by coalmine. This provided the theme for the interior design. A replica of the drilling rig is the focal point and features under a (40m diameter) glass dome. The past relationship with mining is implemented in a stylish, playful way. A fantastic example of this is the unique 100 meter long Blackhole-slide, that leads to a realistic mine scene.

The AQUApark is widely dominated by the glass dome, with its changeable light effects it is the ultimate in aesthetics for the evenings. The lighting plan contributes to the exterior area. During the daytime the dome is opened in fine weather, giving visitors an open-air feel for maximum comfort on sunnier days.

The tropical pool area includes a number of swimming, fun and recreation areas. Some of the facilities are a leisure pool, a training pool, an outdoor pool and a children’s pool. The many slides, including Europe’s longes X-tube, and large sunbathing area with terrace will ensure fun all year round. This huge facility also offers a range of other amenities including a bar, bistro and shops.

Due to its efficient and sustainable energy system the pool is highly economic.
